I drink a vast amount of water. Think of me in terms of a camel, always storing up my water supplies: I never leave the house without my S’Well water bottle, and there is a BKR flask on my desk at all times. It’s partly for health reasons, partly because I am just plain thirsty, and partly because I am very selective about how much alcohol I drink. That also means that when I am hosting at home, whether for the lovely long Sunday lunches I favour, or for smarter dinners like the one I threw here in London for New Year’s Eve, I always have big jugs of water on the table for everyone to drink.
But, as we all know, endless glasses of water aren’t exactly the most thrilling thing to drink, so I like to perk up my water supplies with nicely diluted squashes and cordials, preferably with little or no added sugar but lots of fruit and fruity flavour.
It’s surprising though how few options there have been for grown ups in this department, beyond the ubiquitous plain elderflower. (I still love Robinsons’ Lemon Barley Water with which I grew up, but in my mind it’s for long summer days and, well, tennis. Fun fact: Robinsons Barley Water was created in the changing rooms at Wimbledon in 1935.)
So hurrah for the new Robinsons Fruit Cordials, and Robinsons Fruit Creations which have been specially created with adult taste buds and palettes in mind, and with no artificial colours or flavourings. The Fruit Creations are a grown up squash, containing no added sugar and twice the fruit of Robinsons single concentrates, with a juicier, fruitier flavour, which is reflected in their lovely, enticing flavour combinations, which include Exotic Pineapple, Mango & Passion Fruit, Delicious Peach & Raspberry, Juicy Pear & Blueberry, and Zesty Orange and Mango, amongst others.
The Robinsons Fruit Cordials are a twist on squash, with combinations of real fruit and botanical flavours, with a sugar and Stevia blend, all contained in lovely glass bottles, with versions including Pressed Pear & Elderflower, Raspberry, Rhubarb & Orange Blossom, and Crushed Lime & Mint Cordial.
Last week I went along to the Robinson’s Cordially Invited event to test the range and meet the Robinsons Squash Sommeliers, who turned out to be the most adorable group of children. (Robinson’s are working on the theory that there’s no one that knows squash better than a child).
Before I worked my way through a series of delicious mocktails at the bar, I took part in a sensory test to see if I could identify the main fruit and botanical flavours used in the drinks when reduced to a fine white powder. (I was able to identify orange blossom but not rhubarb – my palette clearly needs work!)
I absolutely loved the Raspberry, Rhubarb & Orange Blossom Fruit Cordial – below, and planned on stocking up on the Crushed Lime & Mint Cordial (beneath).
I finished up my tasting session with a glass of Zesty Orange & Mango (from the Fruit Creations).
Before I left I tried the matched canapes, each with a hint of the fruits in the Fruit Creations and Fruit Cordials.
Given that Robinsons hold a Royal Warrant appointed by HM The Queen, as the fruit juice and soft drinks supplier of choice to the Royal Households, I wonder if the royal family will be enjoying these too…
